The Instagram Version

A minimalist marble tray. A single candle, perfectly centered, flame perfectly still. Crystals arranged with geometric precision. A journal with calligraphy. A linen robe. Warm light. No clutter. No evidence that a real person lives here.

What Mine Actually Looks Like

The candle’s on the coffee table, between a remote control and yesterday’s water glass. The wick needs trimming but I forgot. The flame is flickering because the window’s cracked open and I’m too comfortable to get up.

My “journal” is the Notes app. My “meditation” is staring at the flame while I decompress from the day, which gets interrupted every four minutes by a text I should probably answer.

The cat is sitting too close to the candle again.

Here’s What I’ve Come to Believe

Both versions count.

The practice of it — the ritual, if you want to call it that — isn’t about the staging. It’s about the decision to pause. To light something. To sit with it for even five imperfect minutes in an imperfect room.

The perfectly curated altar and the candle next to the half-eaten piece of toast are doing the same thing: creating a point of stillness in a day that gave you none.

I’d love to see the real version. The imperfect one. That’s the one that actually matters.
